Walking the point
by SDPD Retired
When I was young man I walked the point in this land.
Each day of my life was in my fellow officers hands.
I had my share of gun fights winning each one as luck and training were on my side.
Now I look at these brave women and men walking the point facing bigger guns.
Where do we get such brave daughters and sons, willing to face the crooks with guns?
Just when they have made sure there is no gun,
they have to worry about some drunk driver running them down.
Walking the point takes its toll, young women and men quickly grow old.
There will be times when they lose friends and it’s impossible to understand.
The pain runs so deep you think you’ll die.
You hide from your loved ones, never allowing them or your friends to see you cry!
You miss your friends more than you can say, partly because they were ripped away.
I buried ten in ten years, the highest number in the land was ours to lose.
Twenty five years later I still have a hole in my heart
for the brave friends that were taken while walking the point!
They walk the point so that all of us may lay down our weary heads.
While they stand guard willing to fall as their life may end on any call.
Without any doubt they’re America’s best, but sadly some people could care less.
For some don’t understand the sacrifices made for them,
by hundreds of thousands of officers each night and day.
Every three days on average one falls while walking the point for us all.
Where do we get such brave women and men, may God bless all of them!
I dedicated this to my brave sisters and brothers putting their lives on the line throughout this country every day and night!
Hopefully someday the public may come to understand what you’ve sacrificed for this land.
I send you my most sincere blessing and my prayers to ease the pain you feel this day when you place another brother or sister in their grave.
To all the children left behind you should know that your loss is also mine.
